NHS to defuse confusion over free prescriptions and warn off fraudulent claims

Posters and leaflets detailing a range of ways patients can save on prescriptions have been made available for community pharmacists to offer to patients, alongside a warning of stiff fines for anyone trying to trick dispensers.

The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) has published "communication toolkits" for community pharmacists to promote potential health cost savings to the public, including free prescriptions.  

The information covers medical exemption certificates, maternity exemption certificates, the low-income scheme, universal credit, and HRT.  

The materials contain a "range of digital and social media assets, plus printable posters and leaflets".

All the resources are free for community pharmacists to download and use. 

As well as informing patients whether they may be exempt, they also inform anyone trying to claim free NHS prescriptions without holding a valid medical certificate that they face a fine of £100 if caught. 

"We hope you will help us raise awareness of the support available and prevent patients from receiving a penalty charge notice," the NHSBSA said.
