To help prevent the spread of infectious diseases at school:

  • use effective handwashing at every opportunity
  • ensure all children and staff members are appropriately immunised
  • when appropriate, exclude affected children from school until the infection has cleared.(1)

Handwashing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of infection. Children should be educated on effective hand hygiene technique from an early age and advised to wash hands, particularly after using the toilet and before eating. Children should:

  • wet hands under running water
  • apply soap
  • rub all areas of the palm, fingers and back of the hands well for at least 15 seconds
  • rinse well under running water
  • dry hands with clean paper towels.(4)

To prevent the spread of infection through airborne particles, children should be encouraged to cover their mouth and nose with a disposable tissue and wash hands after using or disposing of tissues.(1)
