The 1969 Afghanistan pharmacies
Just after he graduated from his pharmacy degree at the University of Bradford in 1969, Martin Bennett took part in a third commonwealth expedition, called Comex.
The trips were aimed at young people to help them understand “commonwealth ideals” as they travelled from the UK to India on coaches.
Bennett drove the Yorkshire contingent. Once arriving in India for a festival celebration to mark reaching their destination, he remembers seeing some “very sales orientated” pharmacies in India.
But in Afghanistan, he witnessed three pharmacies and shares photos with C+D of two of them.
“The one with a big desk and big consultation area was interesting,” he tells C+D. “This was years before anybody thought of consultation areas in pharmacies in this country. It really seemed to embrace that.”
