Akhtar had set a target of 240km to run, but he completed this last Saturday after he changed his 8km a day target to 10km.

With his final run today as Muslims celebrate Eid, the Nottinghamshire-based pharmacist has run 300km, the most he’s ever run in a one-month period.

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing though, as he had been hit by illness which forced him to take one day off to recover.

“It’s been horrendous and tough because I’ve had running on top of it, so last week was tough. I could not move and my battery was completely flat."

He is blown away on reaching his fundraising target and then some, having initially posted a £5k target.

Akhtar has now raised £19,333 which surpasses his immense 2025 effort when he raised £14,622.56.

This is the fourth year he’s done Ramadan fundraising, previously running 180km and then 210km in previous years before cycling 500km last year.

Akhtar has raised over £19,000 for Palestine

“A stranger trusts you to donate to you just out of their goodwill because they’ve seen what I’m doing and raising money for.

“I just feel very humbled by the whole experience, the running and the support I’ve had. It’s fantastic but a little bit sad it’s all ending as well.”

He says the sadness comes from going back to normal life after doing something impactful, and of Ramadan passing.

“You’re striving in Ramadan to increase your spiritual connection so that will be missed, so that’s why there is a little bit of sadness. We strive to improve ourselves and make ourselves better.”

Akhtar’s keen to continue his running but will let himself rest for a little bit, albeit admitting he’ll be “itching to go again next week”.

He says this year has been the hardest because of the illness last week. “I’ve never had to contend with that before, so recovering when you’re not well, I’ve had to give myself a talking to and say ‘come on, you can do it’.

“When you’re going out every single day, it’s just about getting the job done. It’s never about times, it’s an accomplishment to just do it every day.”

The donations Akhtar has received will be sent to Muslim Hands UK, a 100% donation policy charity, who are giving food parcels and cash to people in Palestine.

Akhtar’s fundraising campaign is open until Monday.
