Pharmacy contractors who arrange for their employees to complete carbon literacy training will be eligible to receive £642.50, Community Pharmacy Wales (CPW) announced this month (January 9).

The single payment per pharmacy is available for contractors in Wales to claim until March 31 once their employees have completed the training, it said.

A CPW email bulletin said that “in line with the ambitions for Net Zero Wales, all pharmacy employees involved in the provision of NHS pharmaceutical services at the pharmacy can complete ‘climate change - carbon literacy training’”.

CPW added that contractors “can arrange for employees to access any training resource that at a minimum meets the following learning objectives”:

  • Provides an overview of climate change and sustainability in Wales, the UK and the world
  • Evaluates the impact of climate change on health
  • Explores good practice in sustainability as a global citizen

Contractors must complete a declaration in the national electronic claim and audit form (NECAF) system by the deadline and meet “the criteria outlined for this activity of the quality and safety scheme” to receive the payment, it said.

Guidance on how to access the training resources is available on the CPW website.

It comes as a Welsh government-owned bank last week revealed that a pharmacist has received a six-figure loan to open a new pharmacy with rentable consultation rooms for other “independent contractors”.

In January, CPW urged pharmacies to “review” weight loss and diabetes prescriptions, after a patient was caught selling extra tirzepatide “mistakenly prescribed” by their GP.

And in December, the Welsh government revealed that a pilot scheme to make HIV drug pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) “more accessible” via community pharmacies is set to begin in autumn 2025.
