Bursary applications have opened for full-time UK undergraduate students whose parent, carer, spouse, or themselves, work in a community pharmacy.

The Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust’s (LTCT) bursary offers from £500 up to £3,000 for those in “financial need” and the amount awarded depends on “your household income, financial circumstances and the funding available”.

The charity prioritises students whose household income is under £50,000 and no applications will be considered for those whose household income is over £90,000.

The bursary is to support students with the tuition fees, accommodation, living expenses, study materials, equipment and other costs of attending university.

LTCT said the scheme is to “ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent students from reaching their academic potential” and reduce financial pressures on students and their families.

The bursary is available for those working in a community pharmacy registered as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician, or work as a pharmacy dispenser, pharmacy assistant or counter assistant, as well as for pharmacists or pharmacy technicians working in any setting.

The parent, carer, spouse, or themselves must be currently working in the sector and been employed in it for at least five years at the time of applying.

Applicants must already be at or starting university in September or October and applications close on October 1.

Bursaries are paid directly to the universities who pass the money onto the student, and the LTCT will continue awarding the grant each year as long as you study the same course, academic performance is “satisfactory” and there is no change to your financial situation.

The LTCT has awarded 1,600 undergraduate bursaries across 150 UK universities and higher education institutions in the last five years, and with the postgraduate bursary programme, it has granted £10.7m in financial support to students over the last five years too.
